You know that I have been an activist against police brutality especially when it comes to people with disabilities since the late eighties. Two years ago I reached one of my goals to put out a Hip–Hop/Spoken Word CD on this issue.
Now after three years working with Emmitt Thrower who is a retired NY cop with a physical disability turned film maker, poet and play writer, we are about to launch our online fundraiser to finally finish our film documentary on this topic.
This has been a long time coming! First my activism since the 80’s then Krip-Hop/5th Battalion CD on this topic with DJ QUAD now this film documentary with Emmitt Thrower but we need your help when it goes live. Stay Tune. Much love to La Mesha Irizarry who has been with me in this fight since the 90’s
The fund drive will go live next week, March 26/15 and I hope you can help spread the word. Below is our plan for the fundraiser.

Where Is Hope?
A Documentary Project on Police Brutality and Profiling Against People With Disabilities.
Emmitt Thrower (Wabi Sabi Productions Inc) and Leroy Moore (Krip Hop Nation), as most of you may know, have been working together to put together and complete a documentary on Police Brutality Against People With Disabilities since around 2011. It also included a CD mix- tape project of original songs and poetry around the issue by People With Disabilities. It was produced and completed by Leroy Moore and DJ Quad in 2012. The documentary project has been a slower process but is an ongoing effort. But with current condition of Police Killings daily we need this more than ever on a national level. Completing this project is URGENT and could be the catalyst to bring about reform and changes that possibly could save some lives and stop some abuse.
We completed some of the filming in Syracuse NY, Stafford Va., San Francisco and Oakland Ca., over the past years and are ready to begin putting together part of the project. The documentary project is broken down into about 4 parts. Part#1 is what we are looking to fundraise for now. It will be a DVD project that will explore two cases of police killings and the impact it had on love ones and friends left behind. We will learn more about who the victims were and more about their lives. We will showcase the lack of justice in these cases and the commitment by these loved ones to tell their stories from the perspective of having to live with the disabilities caused by those very traumatic experiences. A lifetime sentence of tragedy and emotional pain. The DVD stories will be entitled “The Art of Murder”.
Along with the stories on the DVD we want to bring one of the songs to life by creating a music video. The song is Poe Poes from the CD Mix- Tape compilation. The “Hope” is that once people see the quality of the work (Music, Video) we have done with the DVD and Music Video that it will be easier to raise funds for the other more costly parts. People seem to want to see something tangible of what we are doing. This should satisfy that desire and the cost is reachable.
The funds we will raise will go towards the DVD film and a music video.
Mostly for post production work for creating a professional looking DVD and Teaser and the cost of going to Texas with a crew and equipment to film and produce the high quality music video with the artists. We will also look to do national screenings of the film along with forums around the subject of police brutality Against People With Disabilities. Maybe starting in SF Ca. and NY to start. We expect the cost to be between 15,000-20,000 to do this if we keep it low budget and get as much low or no cost assistance from our network of friends and associates as possible. But i fully expect that we can be successful. Any excess will be used for the next leg of our project’s fundraising efforts. The “Hope” here is to get this DVD and Music Video done this year ASAP and begin fundraising for the other parts. We will then have available our completed DVD and Music Video to showcase our work and movement. That should help in recruiting additional volunteers for our ongoing campaign.
The documentary project part#2 will cover the activists and artists and their process of creating their musical and poetic contributions. It will include interviews of selected artists. We will explore the ongoing efforts by the artists and activist and highlight their story of involvement. This part will require additional travel and filming and another push with our already open GOFUNDme campaign. This part is the most challenging part to fundraise for. Part#2 will intertwine with current efforts at police reform and their political efforts to address the particular issues around people with disabilities and Police Brutality. Which to say the least is a start but still lacking input from our community. We will incorporate the thoughts and ideas from the artists/activists as well. We will explore the subject from a grassroots, political and sociological perspective. We hope to create at least 1 music videos for this film and also incorporate some of the artists music in this part of the documentary. Maybe even get one of our CD artist contributers to create a score for the film. We expect to produce a High Definition Film Festival quality documentary and possibly enter into festivals to get more exposure.
The plan is to make this part of the documentary as artful and musical as possible to take advantage of any entertainment value it may have. People listen when they are also entertained. We want to create the sounds and music for our movement. Music is a powerful unifying tool.
Our goal ultimately is to bring more awareness to the problem and to start dialogues in communities across the nation. We intend to put this issue and our “Where Is Hope?” movement on a bigger stage. We will look to bring Law enforcement agencies and politicians into these forums to sit down to share possible solutions and seek ways to work together for real change.
We will also look to include other concerned organization involved around the general problem of Police Brutality to enlarge the scope and impact of our movement. I expect that once we get things rolling by completing this initial DVD and screenings, they will want to come to us to join in. Then we can decide which way we want to go with or without them. Even though they really are not that accepting of us as partners in their own long standing movements we will not be like them. They do a lot of talking but no accepting. We will be bigger than that as we have no hidden agendas as many organizations do.
The Parts#3 and #4 looks to be more use of the Music and maybe creating 2 additional Music Video OR DVD Concert of a LIVE recorded performance from selected artists who have a submission on the CD mix-tape. That would be quite adventurous as we would need to bring the artists to one location to keep cost down. The alternative would be to travel to them to film their segments. But a LIVE filmed fundraising event with artists in a concert would be powerful way to get the message out and recruit more volunteers as well as maybe even get some press. A great way to help finance the screening and community forums in other states, But 1st things first.
So we hope this brings you up to date and gives you a general idea of what out project and movement is about. You are the most crucial part of bringing this vision to reality and helping to bring concrete change to the community of people with disabilities who are suffering greatly because of Police Abuse and Brutality. It starts with us. Nobody will do it for us. We need you and people like you on our team and we invite you you to participate with us. Join us. You can be the difference. If you know others who would appreciate the opportunity to become part of our movement please recommend them to our team.
This campaign will be ongoing at GOFUNDME.com until the ENTIRE documentary protect is completed. We expect to launch on at the end of March, 2015. We currently have a PRE funding page up that we advertise now up until we launch. Feel Free To SHARE all these links now. Spread the word.
